Nominated for four Tony Awards, the 2009 Broadway musical adaptation of the popular 1980 movie Nine to Five has birthed an accompanying soundtrack that's great fun regardless of whether you've seen the theatre performance.
Dolly Parton doesn’t appear on any of these tunes, but since she wrote the entire score, her playful presence is felt throughout — especially on the songs sung by Megan Hilty, who perfectly portrays Parton’s character Doralee Rhodes for this production. Parton penned a few extra verses for the catchy title track, which opens with blithe aplomb and tons of personality.
Allison Janney affects a flawless Lily Tomlin impersonation as Violet on the clock-punching anthem “Around Here,” but Hilty sounds so much like a dead ringer for Parton on the endearingly twangy “Backwoods Barbie” that should a Dolly Parton biopic come to fruition, Hollywood would be hard-pressed to find a better candidate to play her — just listen to the hilarious “Cowgirl’s Revenge.”
It should come as no surprise that Parton's witty brand of contagious country pop makes perfect sense on a Broadway stage.
